Visualizing Smart Cars

Tim Brown » 12 May 2009 » In visual design »

I couldn’t resist posting this link pointed out to me by my colleague Gabe Trionfi. These are a delightful example of the power of visualization to explore new possibilities. None of these famous car brands would necessarily think of themselves as likely sellers of micro-cars but these images show that perhaps they are not so unlikely after all. Plus they are kind of cute.

    Brilliant!!!
Today i spent 2h10min to drive 15km. I live in São Paulo/Brasil and is visual that the others millions of cars stucked in the in the traffic carried others lonely drivers.
this cars would be a huge success in here. if they could fly too…

Funny thing is, the first reaction I have is “I wouldn’t want to be in an accident in one of these!”

I fear you’ve been in the US a bit too long Tim.

Not sure about “possibilities”, but it would be interesting to to see the same Photoshop guy bloat say a VW Polo, or a Citroedn C1, or Fiat Punto to the scale of a Ford Explorer. Might say something about US vs Euro perceptions of cars, scale, utility, road environmental footprint, and yes maybe “cuteness”.

Haven’t we seen this kind of design for years and years from Hot Wheels?

Sometimes, toys precede real world innovation. Movies tend to do that even better.
